Residents of Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon will soon have a convenient way to safely dispose of used or unwanted batteries.
Starting April 21, during their regular recycling collection day, Peel Region residents can place batteries at the curb for special pickup as part of the region’s twice-yearly battery collection program.
Here’s how to properly prepare your batteries for collection, according to Peel Region:
-
Place single-use and rechargeable batteries in a transparent, sealed plastic bag
-
Tape the ends of all rechargeable and 9V batteries to prevent sparks or fire hazards
-
On your scheduled battery pickup day, put the bag on top of your closed green bin.
-
If you don’t use a green bin, place the bag next to your recycling bags
Battery collection will run from April 21 to May 1, with pickup happening on your usual recycling day. For some households, that means collection in the first week, and for others, it will happen during the second week, depending on their recycling schedule.
To confirm your exact pickup date, visit Peel Region’s online collection calendar.
⚠️ Important Reminder:
Car batteries and sealed lead acid batteries are NOT accepted during curbside collection. These must be dropped off at a Community Recycling Centre, where they can be disposed of safely and free of charge.
Peel Region emphasizes that batteries should never be thrown into garbage, recycling, or organics bins, as they can pose serious fire risks in collection trucks and at waste facilities.
By participating in the program, residents help keep hazardous materials out of landfills, protecting the environment and the safety of the Peel community. Since launching the program, the region has successfully diverted over 240,000 kilograms of batteries from landfill.
