The Ontario government’s annual Sunshine List for 2023 unveiled startling figures, showcasing over 1,350 City of Brampton employees earning $100,000 or more. This marked a significant 14.3% increase from the previous year’s 1,194 entries.
Leading the pack was Commissioner of Legislative Services, Paul Morrison, boasting a hefty salary of $345,122.53 alongside taxable benefits amounting to $38,785.24. Following closely was Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Marlon Kallideen with $309,471.78 in salary and $19,558.51 in benefits. Not to be outdone, Community Services Commissioner Bill Boyes secured the third spot with a salary of $272,070.92 and benefits totaling $3,589.04.
Interestingly, former CAO David Barrick, despite not being active since February 2022, ranked fourth on the list, commanding $267,413.41 in salary and $18,587.76 in taxable benefits. Meanwhile, Commissioner of Corporate Support Services Alex Milojevic rounded off Brampton’s top five highest earners, enjoying a salary of $254,820.95 and benefits amounting to $19,363.59.
The list also featured recently retired City Clerk Peter Fay in the sixth position, earning $216,905.80 in salary and $19,244.98 in benefits. Former Commissioner of Legislative Services Diana Soos followed, earning $215,090.49 in salary without any taxable benefits.
Further down the ranks, District Fire Chief Jeff Pierog stood at eighth place with $212,833.88 in salary and $590.32 in benefits. Commissioner of Planning, Building, and Growth Management Steve Ganesh and Director of Organizational Performance and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Vincent Rodo rounded up the top ten earners with $212,526.64/$19,247.80 and $208,101.04/$6,328.02 in salary/benefits, respectively.
It’s worth noting that Diana Soos, no longer with the city, was the sole female among Brampton’s top ten earners.
Mayor Patrick Brown, representing city council on the list, earned $149,022.06 in salary and $19,059.24 in benefits, showcasing a slight increase from the previous year’s earnings.
On a provincial scale, Ontario Power Generation’s President and CEO Kenneth Hartwick claimed the top spot with a staggering salary of $1,925,372 and $7,539.84 in benefits, making him the highest-paid public employee in Ontario for 2023. The top five earners in the province were all from OPG, with Hartwick and Chief Strategy Officer Dominique Miniere being the only ones surpassing the million-dollar mark in salary for the year.
The release of such lists always stirs curiosity and discussions around public sector compensation, shedding light on the earning dynamics within government entities.
