‘Slap on the Wrist’ Auto Thefts Decrease in Peel, But Mayor Calls for Further Action

While Peel Region has seen a significant decline in auto thefts this year, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown is pushing for more decisive measures to combat the crime.

Brown, who had previously advocated for the installation of vehicle scanners at major intermodal hubs in Brampton and Vaughan—used to transport stolen vehicles to the Port of Montreal—expressed satisfaction with the progress made. Those scanners were implemented last year, and Brown noted that the region has seen a 50% reduction in auto thefts as a result.

However, he emphasized that to achieve even greater reductions, further action is needed, particularly in addressing issues around bail reform and tackling illegal activities at the Port of Montreal. “The net result is we’ve seen auto theft down by 50% in Peel,” Brown stated. “But if we want to go beyond that, we need to deal with bail policies and the activities happening at the Port of Montreal.”
